Summary

Connie Sciolino is the owner and head coach at The Alpine Training Center in Boulder, Colorado. The ATC is a no-frills gym on the outskirts of town that helps outdoor athletes become better skiers, climbers, runners, and bikers through strength training. Connie trains everyone from professional athletes to weekend warriors, including one of the climbers in the hit mountaineering documentary, Meru. • The workouts are grueling, both physically and mentally. But her clients' results speak for themselves—committed athletes leave the gym stronger, tougher, more resistant to injury, and better equipped to tackle the challenges of the high mountains. Thanks to her diverse collection of educational, professional, athletic, and outdoor experiences, Connie is setting a new standard for training for mountain-focused sports. • http://mountainandprairie.com/connie-sciolino/ --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 6:25 - Connie explains her work 7:00 - History of the Alpine Training Center 9:55 - How is ATC different than Crossfit 11:25 - "Special" ATC exercises (i.e. "sandbag getups" and "Curtis Ps") 14:15 - Connie's athletic, educational, and professional background 18:15 - Early days of experimenting with ski-focused weight training 23:10 - Connie's athletic experiences in Jackson Hole and the West 26:00 - How Connie built ATC's unique culture 30:20 - How Connie builds programs for such a wide range of abilities 33:15 - How Connie trains mental toughness 36:55 - The coaching team at ATC 49:25 - Gym Jones 53:00 - Meru and training Renan Ozturk 1:02:30 - Advice for ATC-like training if you don't live in Boulder 1:05:40 - Connie's 1-hour body weight challenge: As many push-ups, air squats, and sit-ups. Hey, this is Ed Roberson, and this is the Mountain and Prairie Podcast.

0:10.0

This is your Roberson, and this is the Mountain and Prairie Podcast.

0:13.0

If this is your first time listening, the purpose of the podcast is to introduce you to some of the

0:17.1

innovative and creative individuals who are helping to shape the future of the American West.

0:21.6

These are people I meet through my work as a

0:23.6

Rocky Mountain Ranch broker and through my hobbies that revolve around spending as

0:27.4

much time as possible up high in the mountains. I'll be chatting with ranchers

0:31.0

and writers, conservationists and entrepreneurs,

0:33.4

athletes and artist, pretty much anyone who does interesting work in the West and has a good

0:37.8

story to tell.

0:38.8

Before we get started, I want to thank everyone who's helped to spread the word about

0:42.2

the podcast this week.

0:43.7

Thanks for sharing it on social media and by email and by word of mouth.

0:47.8

We had a really, really great response to the first two episodes and to be honest, I was just

0:51.9

glad and actually surprised that anybody other than my wife

0:54.9

actually tuned in. I also really appreciate the five store reviews that some of you have left

1:00.5

on iTunes. The best one was definitely no question by somebody who goes by the

1:07.0

cod name, Userific. Interesting choice of a name, but anyway, it was a five-store review, which was very generous of

1:15.5

Userific. And the best part was that it was not so much about the podcast as it was a direct quote from the second best movie of all time

1:26.2

roadhouse starring Patrick Swayze. I have a few hunches as to who userific actually is regardless, I'm always honored to be associated with anything related to this ways, other than the movie Ghost, of course.

1:39.0

And in case you're wondering, the first best movie of all time is Cobra Starring Sylvester Stallone.

1:45.0

So thanks so much for the reviews and the social media promotion.
