Well, the Houston mayoral campaign hums along. It hasn't gone retail yet. That'll start

in the early fall, usually about the first of September. You will see a barrage of campaign

ads beginning and that will heat up through October. Several of the candidates have dropped

out. The field rather than growing is shrinking. And the reason is that Sheila Jackson Lee's

brain trust, which is Sylvester Turner and Rodney Ellis, got those other two candidates out.

They were two young, black, ambitious officeholders and they were told very clearly, you'll split

the black vote. So we got to get you out. We'll find you another position. Well, one of them

is running for Sheila Jackson Lee's congressional seat. And that won't work because if Sheila

loses the mayor's race, she runs for re-election to Congress. So you're not going to beat her

in her own seat. And if she wins the mayor's race, Sylvester Turner runs for that congressional

seat. And he's going to get her support. And you're not going to beat Sylvester. So you'd have

been better off just staying in the mayor's race. But that's how this works. We have the meetings.

We tell them you do this for the cause. It's the black tribal thing. You've got to get out.

Our tribe has to beat their tribe. Sylvester Turner telling a group at sunny side several weekends

ago, don't let me be the last person that looks like me to be the mayor. See, we got to keep

the mayor's office black. And you say that. You say that in clear terms because there's no punishment

for that. There's no blowback. The audience is not going, what kind of stupid comment is that? Vote

for Sheila Jackson Lee because she's black. Yep. That's exactly what you say. And you criticize

people like me for pointing it out where the race is. I'm just going to say what it is. These people

don't scare me. These are the worst of the worst, not the best of the best. We're not getting the

best running for office. So Sheila Jackson Lee is humming along. She will not report cash on hand.

She'll only report the amount of money that she's raised. And it's a little over a million dollars
