Summary

The story of Hero and Leander is one of the most widely known myths of ancient Greece, except, we have no ancient Greek text sources. But that just makes it all the more interesting...

CW/TW: far too many Greek myths involve assault. Given it's fiction, and typically involves gods and/or monsters, I'm not as deferential as I would be were I referencing the real thing.

Sources: Ovid's Heroides, translated by Harold Isbell and found on Theoi.com; The Oxford Dictionary of Classical Myth and Reception; Musaeus' Hero and Leander, translated by Laurence Eusden; Wikipedia (cue shock and horror!) for works of reception, Christopher Marlowe's Hero and Leander.

Hero and Leander is one of those stories that I knew the names of

knew the names super well and so completely assumed that I just knew the story itself

or that it was something I would recognize immediately as I began to read the sources

1:19.0

But nope, actually the story of Hero and Leander is fascinating for whole host of reasons

1:24.5

but I would argue very few of those reasons are actually found in the ancient sources that survive

1:31.0

That part is ultimately what interests me

1:35.5

I finally decided to look into this myth because of this week's upcoming conversation episode
