In late 2018, the American Academy of Pediatrics put out a policy statement entitled,

Ensuring Comprehensive Care and Support

for Transgender and Gender Diversity Children and Adolescence.

According to the AAP, this statement, quote,

reviews the latest research and provides recommendations

that focus specifically on children who identify

as transgender or gender diverse."

But while the AAP statement purported to be based on the, quote,

latest research, end quote, experts in the field were surprised to see that the recommendations essentially boil down to the idea of pure affirmation.

In other words, the AAP recommended that doctors who are presented with a child who believes he or she is

transgender should always respond by affirming that child's belief in their new

gender identity. While that policy is no doubt rooted in compassionate attitudes, experts in the field noted that

it contradicted four decades of research showing that prepubescent children who present

as trans revert to their biological sex-based gender in two-thirds of cases
