0:12.9	In today's archive talk from climate justice and human rights lawyer Colette Pichon Battle at TED Women in 2019, she begins preparing us for startling sea level rise and how coastal

0:28.6	It was about two years after Hurricane Katrina that I first saw the Louisiana flood maps.
0:35.4	These flood maps are used to show land loss in the past
0:39.1	and land loss that is to come.
0:41.9	On this particular day at a community meeting,
0:45.2	these maps were used to explain
0:47.0	how a 30-foot tidal surge that accompanied Hurricane Katrina
0:51.1	could flood communities like mine in South Louisiana
0:55.0	and communities across the Mississippi and Alabama coast.
0:59.0	It turns out that the land we were losing was our buffer from the sea.
1:05.0	I volunteered to interact with the graphics on the wall,
1:09.0	and in an instant my life changed for the second time in two years.
1:13.2	The graphics showed massive land loss in South Louisiana
1:17.9	and an encroaching sea.
1:20.3	But more specifically, the graphics showed the disappearance of my community
1:26.5	and many other communities before the end of the century.
1:31.1	I wasn't alone at the front of the room.
1:33.8	I was standing there with other members of South Louisiana's communities,
1:38.4	black, native, poor.
1:41.9	We thought we were just bound by temporary disaster recovery, but we found that we were now
