The narrator draws to our attention the love that Ruth has for Naomi.

When Boas says to Ruth later in the story, this kindness is even greater than you've

shown before, I always used to assume he was saying you're being kind to me by being willing to marry an older man.

But the kindness that Ruth has shown is the kindness to Naomi.

And I think Boaz is saying, this kindness that you're showing your mother and law in being willing to bear a son or her is an astonishing kindness.
