The Odyssey for modern audiences, because next year we'll be getting a new version of the Odyssey coming out from Hollywood.

0:19.2

Hello everyone. Yes, this is bad news, but the good news is that we are going to be doing this great podcast

0:24.6

and we are going to set the record straight and give you ammunition because there is going to be a woke onslaught on the Odyssey.

0:32.6

You know, I'm not even sure it's going to be woke. I don't think it's going to be a woke onslaught.

0:41.5

I think what it is going to be is typical Hollywood incompetence, actually.

0:48.7

Okay. There's going to be an incompetent onslaught on the Odyssey. I'm genuinely not too worried about it being woke.

0:56.4

I just think they're not going to do a good job because I think Hollywood really has a problem with its own ability to tell stories now.

1:02.5

And so it's just stuck in this perennial position where everything it produces is just kind of crap.

1:06.2

It's just, I mean, when was the last truly great film they produced?

1:11.2

I mean, yeah, I can't give you an answer of the top of my head.

1:11.9

Right, exactly.

1:22.0

But what I think very, very briefly, is that in the past, especially 80s and 90s, the average movie was far better than the movie now.

1:22.4

Yeah.

1:25.6

Now we have either very good movies or very bad ones.

1:28.2

And most of them, sadly are bad ones. I mean mean it is for you young people watching it is crazy how many absolute bangers there were all through the 80s and 90s and even the early 2000s.

1:38.3

And even the sort of the late 2000s when movies are starting to become crap, even the movies that we

1:44.8

thought were crap then have aged like fine wine. Yep. And have become better just by comparison

1:52.1

to what is being produced now. Yeah. It's honestly, it's genuinely wild. Like there are some,

1:58.1

like there's a film called Van Helsing, uh, with, uh, Hugh Jackman that was panned, absolutely panned. If you go back and watch it, you realize this is not actually a terrible film. It's just that by comparison to the films that had just preceded it. Uh, another one is the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Yes, Sean Connery. Yeah, yeah. I, I actually went back and watched that a few years ago and I was like, oh, this isn't bad actually. We just didn't know how good we had it. Yeah. And so this is the lens through which I'm approaching this discussion of the Odyssey and the movie that's going to be coming out. So anyway, let's talk about the Odyssey. So you

2:35.8

know what to expect theoretically from the story of the thing. So of course, the Odyssey is an ancient

2:44.5

Greek epic poem presumably written by Homer, although anything claimed to be written by Homer

2:49.1

we can't be sure about. But it describes what happens after the sack of Troy, because the Iliad actually
