| 0:00.0 | I'm Peter Martin. |
| 0:15.1 | And I'm Christian Sams. |
| 0:17.2 | And this is the You'll Hear at podcast, Daily Jazz Advice coming at you. What's going on, Christian? How you doing, man? I'm doing good. I'm so excited for today's episode, not the least of which Adam isn't here. Not that that's like a bad thing or a good thing. It's just a thing. But we have a very special guest, Christian Sands, wonderful young pianist. Actually, I don't even know if I can keep calling you a young pianist because you're getting older. But I always remember you when you were younger, but really one of my favorite pianists, one of my favorite people in the jazz community that I've gotten a chance to meet. And I love his last album. So I invited Christian to come on. |
| 0:54.9 | So thank you so much for being here. |
| 0:56.6 | Of course, man. |
| 0:57.3 | Thank you for having me. And you're kind of our first official. Well, you're definitely the first kind of co-host if you're up for doing that. And I probably should have told you that. But, you know, we're very casual here at the UL here. Totally. We'll just, you know, we'll split the royalties and everything. |
| 0:52.9 | I'm not worried. |
| 0:53.4 | Oh, that's good. |
| 0:54.0 | We can definitely split the royalties. |
| 0:55.3 | That's a very easy, non-existent check. |
| 1:15.9 | So you were also requested by several of our listeners. And actually, a number of people have been requested, but what I like to do is focus in the ones that I'm interested in having as well, and I only mentioned them. |
| 1:28.7 | So I was super excited that you agreed to do this for that, because I know a lot of our listeners are fans of yours, and have heard you live, heard you on an album, heard you know, Christian McBride's trio, all the different things that you've done in your career. |
| 1:42.5 | So excited to present you to them by special requests, because we're all all about like, you know, giving the people what they want here. I don't know if I mentioned that before either. That's kind of one of our... Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. This is very cool. It's a very cool podcast. So maybe we could jump right in. I think most folks certainly die hard, or even medium, die hard fans know who you are, but you're from Connecticut, New Haven. Were you born and raised in New Haven? I was, yeah. Okay. Well, you know what? We all got to be from somewhere. I'm from St. Louis, so that's how we do it, you know? Right. But I know that, you know, there was a lot of talk about, you know, you being a |
| 2:19.7 | prodigy and stuff. And I, I don't know if you would describe yourself as that whenever I talk to |
| 2:24.1 | people that are, you know, other people say they're a prodigy. I don't know. But I know you |
| 2:30.2 | had some association with Dr. Billy Taylor and he took an interest and notice in you |
| 2:35.0 | at a young age, right? |
| 2:36.6 | Yeah, yeah. |
| 2:37.3 | I spent a lot of time with him when I was younger, sort of in the beginning of high school. |
| 2:44.1 | But I've been playing for so long. |
| 2:45.5 | I've been playing since I was about officially, you know, since I was like four. |
| 2:51.6 | Nice. |
