Summary

Frederick Clarkson is one of the foremost experts on Christian Dominionism in the United States (“Dominionism” is the theocratic idea that Christians are called by God to exercise dominion over every aspect of society by taking control of political and cultural institutions). Fred is a journalist and the author of the classic "Eternal Hostility: The Struggle Between Theocracy and Democracy." He broke the story of Project Blitz, a coalition of conservative Christian groups working to enact Dominionist legislation in state & local legislatures across the U.S., and helped set up BlitzWatch.org to monitor, track, and defeat attempts by Christian Nationalists to implement their distorted view of religious freedom. In this interview, we talk about the contemporary politics of Dominionism. We talk about how we got here and why Dominionists are exerting so much power and influence in public life. 1:13.8

think we talked maybe in the late 80s about the Moonies, maybe earlier, but you are so bright,

1:24.1

and you've spent so much time, especially researching the issue of religious freedom.

1:30.4

1:38.5

to understand more about what's going on politically with the forces that are trying to move the conversation

1:49.2

away from pluralistic democratic traditions to something more extreme. And before I ask my first

1:59.0

question, I just want to thank you for all your help.

2:02.8

You helped me tremendously when I was researching the cult of Trump.

2:07.4

But you've also helped educate me about issues around religious freedom.

2:12.2

For example, when I was out of the Moonies talking about mind control and brainwashing and such, it was

2:19.8

you who said, you know, Steve, the Moonies really violated your religious freedom as a

2:25.3

Jew when they lied to you and said they weren't part of a religious group.
