Summary

In which John Heilemann talks with Chris Matthews, the longtime MSNBC commentator and host for more than 20 years of one of the network's flagship programs, Hardball. Matthews, whose career before becoming a cable news fixture included stints as a speechwriter in Jimmy Carter's White House and an aide to former House Speaker Tip O'Neill, is also the author of nine best-selling books, the most recent of which, This Country: My in Politics and History, was published in June. Heilemann and Matthews discuss This Country and how Matthews's work in government informed his analysis as a TV host; Joe Biden's presidency and the tensions between progressives and moderates in the Democratic Party; the sexual misconduct allegations against New York governor Andrew Cuomo; and the long-run implications of the January 6 insurrection and Donald Trump's Big Lie about the 2020 election for America's future as a democratic republic. Matthews, who served for a time as a member of the Capitol police force, also reflects on the heroism of the officers who risked their lives on January 6 and the appalling disparagement of them by many on the right. Hey everyone, John Hylman here and welcome to Hell in High Water, my podcast from the

Last week in an emotional ceremony in the White House Rose Garden, Joe Biden honored the

various police forces that responded to the insurrection at the Capitol in January by

signing a bill into law awarding those officers congressional gold medals.

As I watched the coverage of that ceremony on TV, I kept thinking about the man who wasn't

there.

A former longtime cable host I would have loved to hear from about the courage of those

cops and what took place at the Capitol in January 6th because that former broadcaster

0:51.5

was once a Capitol Hill police officer himself.

0:54.8

And because his historical knowledge about and reverence for the institution of Congress

0:59.7

and the peaceful transfer of power that were both threatened that day, what it made his

perspective particularly valuable in explaining why the ceremony in the Rose Garden was so moving

1:08.5

and so necessary as the country continues to grapple with the meaning and implications

1:12.7

of the insurrection.

1:14.6

But the truth is I've been missing the voice of that former broadcaster all throughout the

1:18.0

dark and dangerous period we've all been living through since the birth of the big

1:21.4

lie about the 2020 election, the voice that for more than 20 years was among the most

recognizable on television.

1:28.6

Bringing out more or less every weeknight on MSNBC sounding something like this.

Chris Matthews is one of the few guests we could have on this podcast who really does

need no introduction.
