Well, I'm standing here right now at the top of what's called the Acropolis, which means

upper city in the city of Pergamum, which is obviously one of the churches that Jesus

addresses in Revelation chapter 2 and 3.

Herggema was an extremely important city dominated by two things, political power and especially

idol worship, an absolute infestation of temples to the pagan, Greek, and Roman gods and goddesses.

This was the city that these precious Christians lived in.

Right over my shoulder, you'll see right here are the remains of the Temple of Athena.

If you look very closely, there is a solitary olive tree.

That is the exact spot where the cult statue to Athena stood

and where the people in the city

were called and demanded to come and worship.

To the right of the shelf where Athena's temple was, this was the temple of Zeus.

Zeus was considered the god of gods or in language that may sound familiar, the King of Kings.

If you look over here to my left,

what you'll see is right down here past this little theater,

Temple to Dionysus.

And then if you look very far down, right now

where all of these homes are, the residential area,

this is where there was a large hospital

called the Esclepion,

which was dedicated to the goddess Asclepius, who is the goddess of healing.
