On this episode of Newt's World, the US federal government and prosecutors have ramped up

scrutiny into the Chinese government's inflowage buying and espionage operations on American

campuses.

Millions and millions of dollars have been donated to US universities from China and the

Chinese Communist Party.

Many of the Chinese contributions were listed as coming from quote, anonymous donors.

A practice expert say is an easy tactic that allows the Chinese to penetrate the US education

system.

The issue of Chinese investment in US universities and the lack of transparency is alarming.

I'm pleased to welcome my guest Andrew Lelling, US Attorney for the District of Massachusetts.

Andy Lelling is one of five US attorneys leading the initiative which began in November

2018.

This effort, which aims to blunt China's effort to improperly acquire cutting-edge technology,

has focused on what the Department of Justice calls non-traditional collaborators.

The vast majority of cases that prosecutors are downing involve scientists working in

the high tech industry or in academia.

you're investigating what has turned out to be, I think, a much bigger challenge than
