It's being called AI's Sputnik Moment. A. Small Chinese artificial intelligence startup called

DeepSeek has sent shockwaves through Silicon Valley, Washington, D.C., and Wall Street.

It all started just about a week ago when DeepSeek launched its AI model.

It now seems just as capable as leading chatbots from American companies like OpenAI and Google.

And it's popular.

The AI assistant hit number one on the Apple App Store in recent days.

But the thing is, DeepSeek is spending a fraction

of what American tech companies are. And it's making these advancements despite the fact,

or perhaps because of the fact, that the U.S. has export bans on top-of-the-line chips like the ones

made by NVIDIA. The U.S. government has had those trade restrictions in part to keep a lead

in the global AI race. But reports say,

those restrictions have forced Chinese researchers to get creative with what they have available.
