What would the world look like if China achieves its ambitions and how would that be different

from the way it looks today?

Well, I think it looks like a 19th century world, a world that is sort of pre-international

norms and rules in which states can exercise their policies and their desires with a degree

of freedom that really allows that power is essentially the only thing that is as

it's terminant of whether they're able to do it or not.

Matt Turpin is a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution, specializing in US policy

towards China, economic statecraft, and technology innovation.

He is also a senior advisor at Palantir Technologies.

From 2018 to 2019, Matt served as the US National Security Council's director for China, and

as the senior advisor on China to the Secretary of Commerce.

Before entering the White House, Matt served over 22 years in the US Army in a variety of

positions, including serving as an advisor on China to the Chairman and Vice Chairman

of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

I just sat down with Matt to talk about his career and about China.
