Well, General George S. Patton was a controversial figure, but one thing is certain.

He was incredibly effective.

During World War II, he led the Third Army for nine months and eight days.

And in that time, captured 117,000 square miles of territory from France to Germany,

liberating 12,000 towns and cities. He went further faster than any army in the history of warfare.

And right at the outset of World War II,

he gave what is now considered a famous speech to his men on the eve of battle.

I would quote it to you, but it is filled with profanity.

And so there's much in it that would be deemed offensive, but let me sum up.

There's something very interesting about the speech, which you can listen to a version of it

if you watch the movie Patton starring George Scott. There's something interesting in that this speech

has no commands. There's no mission directives. There's no things you're going to do or should do.

It's filled with statements about what is already true of the men in front of him. That they had honor,

that they had courage, that they had love for their brothers, that they had the support of their country.

and that it's his honor to fight alongside them.
