Summary

Jimbo, Jay Harris, Sasha Goryunov and Matt Davies-Adams gather in the studio to cast an eye over the opening weekend of the Premier League season. Chelsea and Liverpool contest yet another draw but it’s a more encouraging afternoon for Mauricio Pochettino in his first game as Blues boss. It’s a point for Tottenham too in their first game of the post-Kane era with Bissouma in particular like a new signing at Brentford. Newcastle are the big winners of the weekend, hammering and exposing Villa. What could they achieve with a full season of Isak at their disposal? Plus Roy gets rough and Brighton take the Pervis. Produced by Charlie Jones. Toby Fobble's show. Today, Premier League gets underway. There's impressive shutouts

0:14.0

from last year's top two, City with Burnley, Arsenal with their fans, and another draw

0:19.1

for Chelsea and Liverpool. We'll be asking, is the feisty midfield scrapper they both need,

0:24.0

Roy Hodgson, is Newcastle's now the best midfield in the league, or is that Enzo Fernandez

0:28.9

on his own, and talking by and large, a good start for Spurs Without Cain and a bad one for Bayern.

0:34.2

All that and much more in this totally probable show.

Listen, I'm excited to tell you that it's Sunday night still in this podcast. Sunday evening,

0:48.4

anyway, 13th of August, we've just seen all but one of Matchday, one of this Premier League season,

0:55.0

and fresh back from action. We have Jay Harris, who's with the Brentford and Spurs at their

1:02.5

Sunday early kickoff. Hey, James. How are you doing? Very good, thanks. Excellent. And such a

1:07.6

guru in other Matchday v. Adams, who's laced back from Stamper Bridge after a thrilling,

1:13.3

one-one draw. Thrilling first half. Yeah. Not such a thrilling second half. Right. What about

1:19.4

you, Matt? You were at the top of the east stand. I was at the top of the shed in a second half.

1:22.5

How did it look like to you? I'd call it an absorbing contest, which means yeah, the second half

1:28.9

is a pretty good fun to watch on TV. I think Grace Robinson was saying, let's just abandon having

1:33.0

DMs all together from now on, because this is a lot of fun. But yeah, that's not a plan that either

1:40.0

club, I guess, are looking to follow up on, because attempts to sign, Lavior, or Casado, etc.

1:47.2

Rumble on. Beyond that and other more peripheral considerations, what was your moment of the

1:52.8

weekend, then, with one match till to go, Jay? This is a bit of a random pick, but Emerson Royals

1:58.6

and Nutmeg on Shandon Baptiste, because it's just one of those moments where the entire crowd

2:02.3

is like, ooh, they just remind you, though, why we love the Premier League, because

2:06.4

a random Brazilian right back just nutmegs someone out of the complete blue. Very nice indeed.
