Summary

This week we're delighted to have an excuse to talk about Dominic's favourite salty cheese. Halloumi has just been recognised as a product unique to Cyprus — something that eurocrats have hailed as a positive step towards reconciliation on the divided Mediterranean island. Is there any truth to that? Cypriot podcaster Natalie Lamprou is here for a great chat about cheese, politics and Cypriot identity. We're also talking about the French mayor running a town from his jail cell, and the German gymnasts taking a stand against sexualisation in sport.

This is our first-ever episode as part of Sphera, a new collective of brilliant independent media outlets from across Europe. We are excited to be a part of it! Sign up to follow Sphera on Instagram, TikTok and more: https://linktr.ee/Sphera

You can find Natalie's podcast Evris here and read her beautiful piece about Cypriot identity here.

This week's Isolation Inspiration: Romanian documentary Collective, virtual reality experience Pollinator Park, and the Feel Good Film Festival.

Did you see the story this week about this French science experiment where people had to live in a cave for 40 days without like natural light or mobile phones?

0:31.5

Yes, I've been obsessed with it and next time they do it, I want to go in the cave.

0:35.6

I am so intrigued to find out what it did to people

0:38.8

to have no sense of time, basically. But anyway, I was watching these images of these poor

0:45.1

volunteers emerging from their cave this week. And I thought it was a very good metaphor for this

0:49.4

podcast, Dominic, because we are like guiding people out of the cave of not knowing about what's going on in Europe

0:55.6

and dazzling them with the bright light that is our good week, bad week segment.

1:00.9

Is that a good metaphor?

1:02.6

A little bit of a stretch.

1:04.4

It needs a bit of work. I'm going to go back and fine tune it.

1:06.6

It's funny because this week I got a really good present.

1:08.7

I got a clock which just says now.

1:13.0

Is that a good present?

1:14.1

So it turns and it just says now, now, now, now, but in Dutch.

1:20.4

It's really cool and I think it fits really nicely with this cave experiment.

1:24.2

Weird bit of trivia for you from the 1990s UK garage scene. Did you know Craig David

1:29.2

has a watch that just says now on it with no hands? Well, me and Greg David are the cool guys.

1:36.0

The cool guys. Anyway, stepping back into the 21st century for a second, we've got a pretty exciting

1:42.0

announcement. This is the first episode that we're making as

1:45.1

part of our new collaboration with other independent media across Europe called Sphira,

1:50.1

which literally launched a couple of days ago. So it is hot off the press, but we're going to

1:54.1

be working with loads of really cool European media outlets over the next year as part of
