Summary

In this episode, we discuss the Michigan football team's openings at both offensive and defensive coordinator, along with other rumored coaching changes.

We begin with a look at the offensive side of the ball. We discuss the magnitude of Josh Gattis' departure to Miami, how surprising it was, and what it means that Jim Harbaugh already appears to have an immediate plan in place to replace Gattis. We look at the rumored internal candidate due for an upgrade, what he brings to the table, and how his brief time at Michigan has shown how much Harbaugh likes him. We also look at the value of some of the other moves that may be made on the offensive side around him, as continuity is an apparent priority.

In the second half of the show, we discuss the Wolverines' defensive coordinator position. We look at what Michigan should be looking for in a DC — experience, a rising star, recruiting, Xs and Os, mentorship, schematic continuity, etc. We also look at a couple key candidates who have emerged, and what they bring to the table.

We've gotten a lot of requests for this episode, so hopefully we can touch on everything people want to talk about.

Now, if there's at least a little bit of a dip in the news, we're going to talk coordinators, offensive coordinator, which became a discussion topic,

0:22.8

of course, yesterday with Josh Gaddis, leaving to become offensive coordinator at Miami.

0:27.4

And then we'll also talk about defensive coordinator, looking at some of the key candidates

0:32.9

on both sides of the ball and maybe what is important for Michigan to get out of those

0:39.2

positions this year, along with maybe how the rest of the staff shakes out.

0:44.6

So how we're going to break it up, the first half of this episode will be offense.

0:48.7

We'll hit a commercial break, and then we'll have the defense in the second half of the show.

0:53.8

So starting with the offense, Sunday morning, Josh Gaddis, well, it was announced.

0:59.3

I don't think either school, maybe Miami officially announced it.

1:02.5

Michigan never officially did a release or anything on it.

1:06.2

But Josh Gaddis, leaving the Wolverines after three seasons to become offensive coordinator at Miami,

1:12.6

not the dolphins, the hurricanes. So at best, a lateral move. It sounds like he will be getting

1:19.0

more money, but ultimately, I mean, they're a worse program right now in a worse conference.

1:27.2

Recruiting should be easier just on location alone,

1:31.3

but obviously there's other factors that go into that. Plus, it is a new coaching staff with

1:35.7

Mario Cristobel going from Oregon to Miami. But Steve, how, I guess starting with kind of the

1:42.8

surprise factor, you know, I don't think this is a, probably a jaw-dropping shock because of the context of Harbaugh was departing or thought to be departing.

1:55.4

And then he comes back.

1:56.3

And I think how it was put by one of our insiders on our message board was there were assistants on Michigan staff that were shopping for the corner office furniture and now they're told to go back to their cubicle.
