Good evening from New York. I'm Chris Hayes. Tonight we continue to follow the heartbreaking news out of Utah, where the entire country just watched the fatal shooting of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.

Kirk spoke for about 20 minutes at an event for his group, Turning Points USA, where he was shot during a Q&A

with students at Utah Valley University. After an hours-long manhunt for the shooter, FBI

director Cash Patel wrote on social media that a, quote, subject is in custody. During a press

conference, a bit over an hour ago, it was just a few minutes after that post,

the governor of Utah described the person in custody as a person of interest, but as far as we know now,

the investigation is ongoing.

The FBI director is posting that a suspect is in custody.

I would just like clarification.

Do you or do you not have a suspected shooter in custody? We have a person of is in custody? I would just like clarification. Do you or do you not have a suspected

shooter in custody? We have a person of interest in custody. Are you still socially for looking

for another shooter or anybody else? Yes, we are actively looking for anyone and everyone who has

any possible information relating to the shooting.

Kirk, a right-wing political activist and organizer speaker, is survived by his wife and two

young children.

A reporter for Utah's Desert News who was there at Kirk's event this afternoon, spoke

to Katie Turr about what she witnessed.

I've been at UVU all morning.

And we had just been at the event for an hour before it started talking to students.

They were very excited to be there.

The atmosphere is pretty rowdy.
