From the diary of Charles Dawes, the busy bodies and mischief makers of which Washington

has its full quota flutter around, those in public position like birds of ill omen have

said much of unpleasantness between myself and Mr. Coolidge.

I have paid little if any attention to them.

How Charles Dawes, Vice President under Calvin Coolidge from 1925 to 1929, recorded

the situation in his diary, is not generally how observers at the time of politics sought

and how history has seen it.

Indeed, Dawes would have one of the most difficult relationships between a President and a Vice

President at least in the 20th century.

Some of it had to do with strong opinions that Dawes had and on one issue his opinion was

very strong.

The filibuster.

Dawes didn't like it.
