Charles Caleb's career is a convict, spy, detective, congressional candidate, Adventure, and Con Artist span the Civil War Reconstruction

and Guilded age.

His life touched many of the most prominent figures of the era, including Abraham Lincoln,

Jefferson Davis, both of whom gave him a presidential pardon, and Ulysses S Grant.

One contemporary newspaper reported that Callum has as many aliases as there are letters in

the alphabet.

He was a chameleon in a world of strangers, and it's been hard for scholars to track him down because of his many false identities.

After the Civil War, Reconstructured to offer additional opportunities for Calum to repackage his identity when millions were already rebuilding their lives anyway.

He convinced Ulysses S Grant to appoint him U.S. Marshall and persuaded Republicans in Florida

to allow him to win for Congress.

After losing the election, he moved to New York where he became a serial

bigamis and started a fake secret society inspired by the burgeoning ranger

movement. When the newspapers exposed his lives, he spent the next decade living

under an assumed identity and resurfaced in Dayton, Ohio claiming to be a union colonel suffering from dementia in an effort to gain admittance into the National Soldiers Home.
