political turmoil this week. South Korea's president, Yun-Sak-Yul, declared emergency martial law.

It's the first time South Korea has been under martial law since military dictatorship ended there back in the 1980s. With that,

all political activity comes to a halt. The local media is put under government control and more.

The president said the drastic step was needed because his political opponents are overly sympathetic to North Korea and are plotting against democracy.

But then thousands of protesters flooded the streets, chanting end martial law. And just hours later, South Korea's legislature voted unanimously to do just that.

So President Yun lifted the order. And troops who had been deployed to enforce martial law returned to their bases.

Back in the U.S., the White House says it's been in touch with South Korean counterparts and that the relationship between the two countries has not changed.

Still, the U.S. State Department called the Declaration of Marshall Law a serious and grave concern.

South Korea is home to the largest U.S. military base overseas and hosts

nearly 30,000 American troops. Now analysts expect weeks of political conflict in South Korea,
