Yesterday Lee McIntyre told us how to talk to science deniers about scientific facts.

Well today he's going to tell us about the reasons that might not always work and why a person's identity might be even more important than their

level of knowledge. Lee McIntyre is a research fellow at the Center for Philosophy

and History of Science at Boston University.

And he's also the author of the new book How to Talk to a Science Denier,

Conversations with Flat Earthers, Climate Deniers, and others who defy reason. We asked him about how you can convince

someone of something when they have formed their identity against it. Talk

about a tough, a heavy lift. So now I've made the problem even worse. You don't just have to get the person to change their beliefs, you have to get them to change their identity. How can you do that? And yet, it has been done done and now I'll tell you one of my favorite stories.

There was a fellow named Jim Bridenstein who is a member of the House of Representatives who gave a speech on the floor of the House against climate change saying all the things that climate deniers say.

And of course this speech made him famous. Trump appointed him head of NASA.

Bridenstein was head of NASA for maybe a month,

maybe two, short period of time.

And he changed his mind and gave another speech in which he said I was wrong. Now how often does a politician do that about anything?

Said I was wrong climate change is real and we're causing it.
