Summary

Using the existing MILS or Multiple Independent Levels of Security platform, certMILS seeks to find ways of shortening, simplifying, and implementing new certification methodologies with the ultimate goal of efficient security in cyber physical systems across Europe. In this episode we speak with project partners Thorsten Schulz and Holger Blasum about how to better understand certMILS.

The certMILS project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 731456.

Hello and welcome.

0:22.6

I'm Peter Balland from Technicont, and today we look at the CERTMills project once again.

0:27.9

As you recall, this EU-funded effort is researching ways of keeping complex systems safe and secure.

The last time, we talked about trains and power grids that could benefit by rapid

and efficient safety certification methodologies. That's the goal of cert mills. Using the existing

mills or multiple independent levels of security platform, cert mills seeks to find ways of shortening,

simplifying, and implementing new certification

methodologies with the ultimate goal of efficient security in embedded systems across Europe.

Today we speak with Holger Blossom from Cisco and Torsden Schultz from the University of

Rostock, also in Germany.

1:08.5

Both gentlemen are project partners in CERT Mills. They join us remotely from

1:12.7

their home offices today. Welcome and I'll ask you, Holgar, what is CERT Mills and where does

1:17.8

the name come from? So the idea of CERTMills is that we demonstrate how to certify modern embedded systems that are safety and security critical.

1:32.3

So these are also called cyberphysical systems.

1:36.3

And that we, to do this, we not only say that we cert, that cert,

1:42.3

that cert is coming from, but we also say that we cert, that cert, this is where the cert is coming from, but we also

1:46.0

introduce that we intend or that we do apply a certain methodology, which is by using Mills systems.

1:56.0

Mills itself means multiple independence levels of security and or safety.

2:03.1

And maybe Mills is something that needs some explanation.

2:09.9

And actually, the easiest way to explain Mills in my eyes is to start with what we everybody know.
