Hello and welcome to the CEO's podcast. I'm Sophia Besh, and today I'm in conversation with Camino Matera Martinez, who is a senior research fellow in the CR Brussels office and also the resident Spaniard at the CR.

So she's come on the podcast to talk us through the Spanish general elections, which happened last Sunday on April 28th, what they mean for Spain and what they

mean for the EU. Hi, Camino. Hi, Sophia. Great. I think you were even in Spain on Sunday for the

elections, right? Yeah, absolutely. I was there for the week before the elections and on the actual

election days. I've got some interesting insights, mostly gain around

beers in terraces, though, because I was on holidays. Okay, great. Well, to start with, could you

just briefly lay out for us, who were the main parties in these elections and how did they

each fare on Sunday? Spain has gone from a two-party system to a five-party system over the past five years.

And these elections reflected very, very well.

So the first party in these elections was the Socialist Party.

They won the election, but they didn't gain enough seats

to actually form a government.

Secondly, we've got the Conservatives.

Then the third force would be Ciudanus,

so the center, right, center left, the liberals,

however you want to call them, or however they want to call themselves. In fourth position, we've got Unidas Podemos, so that's the far left if you wish, party in Spain.
