Summary

“It's hard to believe that it's over, isn't it? Funny, how we get attached to the struggle.” Join Josh, Brian, Rich and Tony as they attempt to ascend the treacherous peaks of a mysterious mountain while also discovering a bit about themselves along the way. In this issue we discuss how a game began as a simple test of platforming prowess, then evolved into an examination of mental health through game design allegory, which would ultimately lead one of the developers to a deeply profound revelation about their identity. Alongside this, we discuss how the themes and imagery of the game spoke to our experiences. All this and more, as we cover Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry’s 2018 2D platforming adventure, Celeste. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_454.mp3   Music featured in this issue: 1. So, what is Celeste?

0:55.1

Celeste is a 2D pixel art indie platformer in the same vein as Super Meat Boy, where you play

1:03.7

as Madeline in her attempts to climb the mountain known as Celeste and face her inner self in the process.

1:13.6

So this is something that we will likely get into later in the issue, but I debated with

1:21.9

myself about whether or not I should say the name of the developer for this title.

1:29.8

So Maddie Fawson, who is the kind of main lead on Celeste,

1:36.9

had a change of gender identity post the release and development of this title.

1:44.2

And the company name that the developer went by refers to Maddie's dead name.

1:54.1

For anyone who's not familiar with that term, basically a dead name is a trans person's past identity and it is a big, big no-no to refer to

2:07.5

somebody in the trans community by their dead name. But obviously this is a company, a corporate

2:14.7

entity. So I thought that maybe might be a different scenario.

2:19.1

So I consulted some people within the trans community to get their thoughts and feelings.

2:25.2

And while they said that, yes, obviously it is very different from referring to an individual by their dead name,

2:33.9

they advised me to err on the side of caution.
