Good evening. I'm John Dickerson. Maurice DuBois on his way to Rome to cover the election of the next Pope.

We begin in the Holy Land with Israel's aggressive new plan to remove Hamas terrorists from the

Gaza Strip. Israeli cabinet ministers approved a plan to seize more of the 25-mile-long

Palestinian territory and hold it indefinitely. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians already

suffering from a humanitarian crisis would be forced to move, Israel says, for their own safety.

The stepped-up ground war seems to be getting a green light from the Trump administration.

The Israelis say the plan will not be implemented until after President Trump visits the region next week.

A small window of time, Prime Minister Netanyahu hopes

to use to gain a ceasefire and hostage release deal.

We get to tales now from Weisha Zhang, who's at the White House.

President Trump has not directly responded to Israel's plan,

but today, White House officials stress that Hamas will pay consequences if it doesn't

release all the hostages, including one American who is still believed to be alive and

the bodies of four others.

The new Israeli operation would call up tens of thousands of reserve soldiers to expand military operations in Gaza and move hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to the south.

In Israeli government spokesperson argues the plan is not an occupation, but is not said how long its soldiers would stay.

Israel has made clear, release the hostages, and for Hamas to lay down its arms and the war

will end.
