Summary

Dr. Amy Compton-Phillips treated the United States’s first coronavirus patient. She is the chief clinical officer and executive vice president at Providence St. Joseph Health, a Catholic hospital located outside Seattle. We asked her about where we are as a country in addressing this pandemic. Her answers were pretty clear: We aren’t even close to overreacting; we need to support our medical professionals; it’s normal to be afraid, but we don’t need to be conquered by our fear. Dr. Compton-Phillips also gives insight into the unique role that Catholic health care is and should be playing during this pandemic, and what it’s done in previous public health emergencies.  On Signs of the Times, we discuss what trying to practice our faith looks like from home and how the pandemic is affecting the church around the world. We also share a bit of good news: Washington State’s lieutenant governor (and former Jesuitical guest) Cyrus Habib announced that he's not running for re-election—he’s joining the Jesuits instead.  Links from the show:  Coronavirus: News, Reflections, Analysis. 0:39.0

yeah but I guess first maybe we should do a little Lenten check-in because yeah our

0:45.8

penance got a lot harder this week I don't know why we're still doing Lent at

0:49.4

least our Lenten penances I see it feels like we're giving up a lot of things.

0:54.3

Yeah. To remind our listeners, the host of the Unorthodox podcast gave us our penance for this year, one of which is not using apps of

1:05.8

convenience like seamless or the Domino's Pizza app to order food and

1:10.6

instead talk to people which seemed like an easy thing until our only food

1:15.4

options became take-out. Something that I've done is I've actually picked up the

1:19.9

phone and called people and walked and picked it up, which, you know, while being

1:25.9

as socially distant as possible, but I'm not sure how sustainable that's going to be

1:29.6

especially under if we get anywhere close to like shelter and place orders like some people
