I had applied for a job. I was super qualified for it. I had three good interviews with the team. I thought I was going to get the job. And then the ED called me and she was just kind of raising all these weird concerns that she didn't have solutions to.

She was just thinking out loud.

She was demoting me during the job offer.

My first question was like, I need to tell them how egregiously wrong this was, especially treating a woman of color, especially for an organization that calls itself progressive.

My immediate thought was like, I cannot take this job.

These people aren't even valuing me during the hiring conversation.

How are they going to treat me once I get there?

But like, this was a problem.

They should know they can't treat people of color like this.

Like, they should know they can't, you know, treat anyone like this.

And that really pushed me to do it because I was like, you know, I want other people from

underrepresented communities to feel empowered, to stand up for themselves, to negotiate

things well, to understand how the hiring process works.

And if I can prevent any other person from going through the experience I did, then it's,

it's all worth it. I'm not sure what's worse.

A rejection letter from the company I had just applied for, or no reply at all.
