You may know nothing about Samuel J. Tilden, and you may know two things. If you know anything

about him, you know that he nearly won the presidency in 1876 in the disputed election

that put Rutherford B. Hayes into the presidency. Many argued at the time,

and many would still argue that he won the election of 1876, and thus Samuel Tilden,

who got more popular votes, should be president. Because it wasn't merely an electoral college

versus popular vote in his case, canvassing boards, a congressional count,

and most likely a meeting at the Wormley Hotel in D.C., perhaps the influence of current President

Grant, might have all added up to do his presidential hopes in. It's worth telling his story,

but there's an angle that's often not told to his story, and it relates to a major American industry, one that's always in the news.
