On May 21st, 2004, a man passed away in custody after committing a random crime and taking the lives of almost an entire family inside of their own safe home.

On August 15, 1967, in the early morning hours at Shell Lake in Saskatchewan, Canada,

nine members of a family were shot and killed by a man who was later called Canada's worst random mass murderer.

Victor Ernest Hoffman, just 21 years old at the time, had been released from mental hospital just three weeks before he decided to arm himself with a 22-caliber, Browning, pump-action repeater rifle, and shoot all but one member of the Peterson family.

Killed on their own farm, seven of Victor's victims were just children. Two were adults, and of the

28 shots fired, 27 found their intended target. Mr. James Patterson, 47 years old, was shot inside

of the kitchen of his four-room home. His wife Evelyn, 42, and their one-year-old son, Larry, were found in the backyard,

while each of the other children, 17-year-old Jean, 13-year-old Mary, 11-year-old Dorothy, 9-year-old

Pearl, 5-year-old William, and 2-year-old Colin were found dead inside of their beds.

They had all been shot while sound asleep.
