California's governor stops a bid to keep artificial intelligence from going too far.

I'm David Brancaccio, a landmark artificial intelligence safety

bill in California was either necessary or misdirected, depending on whom you asked. The state's

governor Gavin Newsom vetoed it yesterday yesterday, citing with tech giants worried

about innovation.

Marketplace's Nova Safo has more.

The bill would have established a statewide entity to oversee artificial intelligence breakthroughs.

It also would have mandated safety testing of the biggest systems and required proof of

kill switches that turned those systems off.
