where leading historians delve into the lives of history's most intriguing and significant figures. Calamity Jane roars into the popular imagination atop the Deadwood stage, with a whip-crack

away and her pistol ready-loaded. A bold and resourceful frontiers woman, Calamity held her own among the men of the American West,

but was also instrumental in the making of her own myth.

I spoke to Professor Karen Jones, author of a book on Calamity's many lives and afterlives,

to piece together what is known about the humble origins of the woman who

became known as the heroine of the plains. Calamity Jane is an icon of the American Old West

and a really vibrant presence in popular culture today. What exactly sets her apart? What sets her apart, for me at least,

and hopefully for many other people too, is the fact that she is a legend. Now, she's a myth,

she's an image and she's a real person. So you've got that collision between her own life,

her biography, the thing she did in the actual West, and then you've got her profile in books,

in Hollywood, and the way that messes with her folklore, the way it develops her folklore. So I think it's

that life and legend, which is part of the story. And the other thing that marks her is where
