This is CBS I in the world. I'm John Bachelor. The very popular governor of California

Gavin Newsom traveling overseas. However, there's a tradition, especially about Asia, and I welcome Bill Whelan of the Hoover Institution,

who is the host of Policy and Politics, the Podcast, as well as the podcast videocast TV show of Goodfellas conversations with his colleagues at the Hoover Institution.

Bill a very good evening to you at first I thought Gavin Newsom is an opportunist.

There's trouble in Israel so he goes and shakes the hand of the

president Mr. Herzog and then I thought well there's trouble in China so he

heads to China to shake the hands of Shijin-Bing. Turns out this is a California tradition, Schwarzenegger before and Jerry Brown. How did their trips work out for them? Good evening, Bill.

Good evening, John. Well, Arnold's trip to China was what you would expect. It was Arnold, so it's a splash event because you have a world-class celebrity.

Jerry Brown's trip was more of a fitting for Jerry Brown.

Didn't really care much for camera attention and such as toward the end of his second stint as governor and he was there to sign a climate accord with Gijon ping.

Newsom's trip was a different animal though and it was opportunistic yes in terms of his

slapping on a stop at Israel beforehand that was opportunism but the China

trip was planned and what Newsom want to do was like Jerry Brown go to China and

talk about climate but because this is Gavin Newsom and unlike Jerry Brown he is an

aspirational Democrat he clearly has designs on national politics it played into

this burgeoning image of him as more than just a California governor as a

Democratic state's been alternative for the Democratic Party.
