Summary

EPISODE 163 - Byways

Team Deakins discusses Roger’s new book BYWAYS as we head into a hiatus from the podcast. In this episode, we discuss what taking stills gives to Roger that film does not, how he enjoys observing things and places, how there is no pressure to shoot anything specific, what he likes to take images of, and why he prefers to shoot in black and white. We talk about his time shooting for the Beaford Archive and developing his eye. He likes dedicating his day to shooting on his stills camera and he only takes iPhone photographs when he’s fishing. We discuss our incredible and collaborative experience working with Damiani, the publishers of BYWAYS.

IMAGES WE DISCUSSED: The Joy of Flight (72), Budapest Runners (116), and Lightning Strikes (131)

Hi and welcome to the Team Deakin's podcast. This podcast is a dialogue between Roger and James

0:10.8

Deakin's often joined in the conversation by a guest. It's very informal and we never know where

0:17.6

it will go. We're connecting through Zoom so bear that in mind when you hear the audio.

Well, hi everybody. Today is going to be a little bit different. First of all, we need to announce

0:41.7

that we're taking a hiatus. We're starting a new project and we know that it's going to take a lot

0:47.2

of our time so we're not going to be able to record while we're doing that. It's not that we're

0:52.8

giving up but we're just taking a hiatus for right now. But we did want to say how much enjoyment

0:59.8

we've had from creating this podcast. It's been wonderful to talk with filmmakers of all categories

1:07.3

and experience their passion for what they do. It's been fascinating to see how different people

1:13.1

doing the same craft can have their own individual approaches. We also want to thank you guys

1:19.9

for your great feedback. It really kept us motivated throughout the all this. It's been fun,

1:25.6

hasn't it, Roger? Yeah, I mean, kept us connected to the world as well during the lockdowns

1:31.2

and all the rest of it. So yeah, it's been quite an experience. I know wonderful experience too.

1:38.4

We decided we'd do one last topic for today and as probably a lot of you know,

1:44.0

Rogers just published a book, his first book of his still photography throughout the year. He's

1:50.7

been taking stills but he's never really shared them with anybody. So during the pandemic, since we

1:56.8

had some time, we decided, hmm, maybe this is a project also that we could do. So we did the book

2:04.7

and the book isn't what you'd expect necessarily because it's not images taken from sets.

2:10.6

It's images that you've taken throughout the years, right, Roger? Yeah, I mean, it was just,

2:15.7

it's like my sketchbook really. It's just things that I've noticed taking photographs over the years.

2:22.5

I'm not a photographer and I'm not obsessed about taking photographs but I often go
