With Chapter 5, the Holy Rule turns toward obedience.

St. Benedict isn't talking about compliance or a loss of freedom.

He's describing a way of staying responsive to God in daily life.

This obedience isn't forced from the outside.

It grows from a heart already trained in listening, restraint,

and clarity. The Benedictine Way understands that fidelity is tested more clearly when the will

is engaged. It's one thing to admire holiness. It's another thing to choose it when your own

preference is strong, when you'd rather do

something else or when the timing feels inconvenient.

Obedience becomes the place where attentiveness takes form and action.

From Chapter 5 of the Rule of Saint Benedict, the first step of humility is unhesitating obedience,

which comes naturally to those who cherish Christ above all.

St. Benedict places obedience within love.

It isn't rooted in fear or pressure.

It grows from what the heart cherishes.

When Christ is preferred above all what the heart cherishes.

When Christ is preferred above all, the heart isn't divided.

It's able to respond because it already knows what it's living for.
