Summary

In this episode of the 50% Facts podcast, we sit down with David Thomas Tao, co-founder, former CEO, and now head of brand for Barbend.com. Barbend is a leading website for strength training and fitness that was recently acquired by Pillar4 Media.

In this interview, Tao discusses his journey to becoming the CEO of Barbend, his thoughts on the future of fitness media, and how Barbend has expanded coverage since its founding to serve the growing market.

Tao talks about the challenges of starting a business and the importance of perseverance. He gives insight on what it’s like to try to raise capital, and how to weather the process of being acquired.

David also writes about spirits, so we kick things off with a discussion about winning over first-time whiskey drinkers.

You can find David on Instagram at @davidthomastao and Twitter @d_tao and obviously at barbend.com.

who is providing news on the strength world actually gets acquired by a serious media

company. I'd seen, I would have never bet that that would have happened years ago, but

0:29.8

it certainly did. David's somebody that I should have crossed paths with by now, but I

0:33.7

hadn't, Mike certainly had. Anyway, we had a great conversation with him that we really

0:39.7

enjoyed, not always the biggest fan of doing remote interviews, but this one was great

0:45.1

because he was a great guest. David's in New York City and they just had the experience

0:49.5

of the Canadian wildfires, blowing smoke there direction and we're in California and we

0:53.5

have that stuff all the time here. So, anyway, that's what's going on at the beginning

0:57.4

of this conversation. It starts in media race, but enjoy.

So we had them on, because we're in the valley basically, so we had them on three sides

1:14.1

of us and it looked like that. Yeah, so we had the power to COVID going on. They're telling

1:19.3

you to wear every mask in the sun and then we have like fucking ash flying from the sky

1:24.3

and they're telling you don't leave your house because you're going to inhale flames or

1:27.1

something else. Seeing the world like that literally does feel like a Harrison Ford movie

1:34.5

or some shit. Yeah, it's Blade Runner. Yeah, it looks insane. I was seeing those pictures

1:40.9

on Twitter in New York. I was like, holy shit. Yeah, Dune is a better analogy. That's

1:46.5

a little more like topical. I haven't seen the whole thing or the Blade Runner sequel

1:50.3

when they're in Vegas. Yes, the orange sky. Actually, that was a great movie. I liked it.

1:57.7

I loved it. And I didn't, you know, didn't like the original Blade Runner the first time
