Summary
For the fourth episode in our five-part series on Britney Spears, Beyond The Blinds’ Troy McEady returns to Pop Pantheon to discuss late period Britney, an unnerving decade+ period where Britney's pop stardom often felt forced upon her and yet produced some of her most beloved and successful music. Troy and Louie start with her EDM reimagining on 2011’s chart-topping Femme Fatale, her first and only album to produce three top ten singles. From there, they unpack Britney’s brief, odd The X Factor tenure, 2013’s derided nadir Britney Jean, her massively lucrative but sometimes bizarre Vegas residency, Piece of Me, and Britney’s final album to date, 2016’s fan-favorite Glory. Finally, they discuss the #FreeBritney movement, the end of conservatorship, Britney’s life beyond the music business, whether this story has any semblance of a happy ending, and her enduring impact on pop.
Join us next week for Part 5, in which we’ll rank Britney Spears in the Official Pop Pantheon.

As I've said in every episode so far, if you haven't listened to the previous episodes, I recommend going through them in order before you get to this one. This is the episode in which we'll be talking about the final leg of Brittany's professional career, as well as the details of the conservatorship, Free Britney and how it all came to an end. We'll touch on her memoir, and then we'll talk about her legacy. Next week, we will be talking about Britney's tier ranking. So without further ado, |
| 1:32.1 | here it is, Britney Spears Part 4. By the turn of the 2010s, Britney Spears's career and public image were in a strange, almost uncanny place. |
| 1:49.3 | On the one hand, she was revivified, at least on the surface, hitting her marks, looking gorgeous, |
| 1:54.1 | and experiencing one of the most consistent hit runs of her entire career. |
| 1:58.2 | And yet, something was different about Britney Spears. The spark in her eye, that evident passion, which powered her entire career. And yet, something was different about Britney Spears. |
| 2:01.4 | The spark in her eye, that evident passion, |
| 2:03.9 | which powered her auspicious arrival on the scene a decade earlier, |
| 2:07.4 | seemed only present in fleeting moments at very best. |
| 2:11.0 | In its place was a sense of marking in going through the motions, |
| 2:14.0 | an eerie, vaguely unplaceable feeling that she didn't want to be there. |
| 2:17.7 | All the pieces of the facade were in place. |
| 2:20.0 | The music slayed, the videos were expensive and spectacular, the world tours and residencies |
| 2:24.1 | marched on, and the records often flew off the shelves. |
| 2:26.7 | But who was ultimately propping it all up seemed like it was perhaps not, as it once was, |
| 2:31.2 | Brittany herself. |
| 2:32.1 | And yet, as maybe the ultimate testament to the enduring magnetism, |
