Summary

For the second in our five-part series on Britney Spears, NPR’s Ann Powers joins Pop Pantheon to discuss Britney’s first attempts to transition from teen queen to grown-up pop star. Ann and Louie tackle Britney's iconic “I’m a Slave 4 U” VMA performance, work with The Neptunes and play at maturity on 2001’s Britney, relationship and breakup with Justin Timberlake, and her one and only starring film role in the teen road comedy Crossroads. Finally, they dive into Britney and Madonna’s VMA kiss, the duo's generational pop baton passing on the single “Me Against The Music” and Britney’s most adventurous record up to that point, 2003’s In the Zone.

Join us next week for Part 3, in which we’ll discuss and Britney's infamous mid-aughts along with 2007's Blackout and 2008's Circus

Welcome to Pop Pantheon, the podcast where we completely overanalyze all of your favorite pop stars and then rank them in the official Pop Pantheon.

This is your host, DJ Louis, the 14th.

I want to remind everybody that our

0:22.5

pop party, main pop girls, is happening on March 21st at the Parkside Lounge in New York City,

0:29.7

and in celebration of our current series, and in celebration of the forthcoming seventh studio album

0:36.0

by Lady Gaga, the theme of this month's main pop

0:39.2

girls party is Brittany versus Gaga, and I'll be there all night playing all of your favorite

0:44.3

songs by both artists, along with many of your other favorite main pop girls. The party will be

0:49.1

hosted by our friends T. Kyle and Bradley from Legends Only, so you won't want to miss that. Again, that's March 21st at the Parkside Lounge and the East Village. Grab your tickets at Poppantheonpod.com or by clicking the link in the show notes of this episode. Also, Gorgeous, gorgeous is happening in LA on March 14th. So tickets for that are also available in the show notes of this episode. Don't forget to rate review and subscribe to the show wherever you're listening to it now. Follow us on social media at Pop Pantheon Pod. We have merch at Poppantheonpod.com and our Patreon channel, Poppantheon, all access, is available at patreon.com slash Poppantheon. We do weekly bonus episodes there. A slightly irritating announcement about our Patreon channel. If you're considering subscribing to PopPantheon All Access right now,

1:29.9

we recommend that you do it in your desktop browser and not on the iOS Patreon app,

1:37.0

downloaded on your phone.

1:38.3

As of late, Apple decided to start charging extra money that they are taking on top of

1:43.1

our Patreon charge. If you subscribe from

1:45.5

within the iOS app, this doesn't affect anybody that's currently subscribed to the podcast,

1:49.6

but if you are subscribing now from here on forward, we recommend that you don't do it in the

1:54.3

Patreon app that you downloaded on your Apple device. You do it from your web browser. Instead,

2:00.1

that way you'll be able to save a couple

2:01.6

bucks and not support Apple's crazy move that they just pulled. So I just want to make sure

2:06.2

that everybody knows that. Even if you subscribe from the web browser, you'll still be able to

2:10.4

use all the same features of Patreon once you're subscribed, including using the app on your phone,

2:15.9

listening to the bonus episodes on Apple Podcasts, etc, etc.

2:19.3

This is literally about just the actual act of subscribing.
