Summary

I'm joined by David Zahl, returning YHP guest and editor-in-chief of Mockingbird's online magazine. David is also a massive Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fan like myself, so I knew he would be perfect to talk with about what we know about Brian Wilson's personal faith and spirituality. We also celebrate what his music has meant to us personally, playing a lot of song clips along the way. This is a dual-feed episode on both the You Have Permission and Pretty Good Vibrations feeds because the content feels like it fits in both places. Brian Wilson passed away on June 11th. Although my attempt to have a strong line between the first half of the episode (more focused on his faith) and the second (mostly just focused on the music), things got a little blended up. Nonetheless, if you'd like to skip most of the faith/theology stuff, a good place to start listening is around the 60 min mark. Welcome back, everybody, to another episode, but already we're running into some clarification,

0:10.7

housekeeping issues, because this is an episode on two podcast feeds, you have permission,

0:17.2

and pretty good vibrations. The two podcasts that I, Dan Koch, host,

0:23.0

Pretty Good Vibrations has been mostly on hiatus during this year of intense internship,

0:27.6

but I, as will be clear in the coming months, I'm trying out some ideas for how to

0:33.3

kind of keep it going in a more sustainable way. But in the meantime, unrelated to that,

0:38.4

today is an episode that just feels like it fits on both feeds. You have permission listeners.

0:45.0

You, depending on the order of episodes released, you will remember my guest today, David Zoll,

0:50.6

my collaborator, I should say, from possibly an episode as early ago as one week ago.

0:57.2

I don't know when these are coming out, but David was on here talking with me not about the

1:03.4

Beach Boys, but at the very end of that episode, we kind of came upon this shared deep love of the Beach Boys. And I'm saying

1:13.8

the kind of depth where the Tobias Fuenke meme, there are dozens of us, applies almost, you know,

1:21.3

maybe there's, maybe there's hundreds. I don't know, a thousand. It's not that many people

1:25.2

that have our level of Beach Boys fandom in the English

1:28.3

speaking world. David, thank you for coming back to join me to commemorate the passing of

1:34.3

the legend Brian Wilson, the goat. I would say the greatest American popular composer. That would

1:40.7

be my sort of take on it. I don't know how you would define his work, but thanks for being back.

1:46.6

Oh, gosh.

1:47.4

I mean, sad circumstances, I suppose, but also so healing, therapeutic to be able to talk to you

1:55.0

and to connect just in general over this, it felt like the right time and in a kind of a

2:00.4

miraculous kind of thunder strike,

2:02.6

the lightning strike. Yeah, kind of wild that we, we basically, we kicked up a friendship
