Summary

It’s always a pleasure to have author, activist, and public theologian Brian McLaren on Nomad. This time we talk with Brian about the vital role that doubt plays in our faith development. Brian breaks down the faith journey into four stages - simplicity, complexity, perplexity and harmony. He talks about the struggles and joys of each stage, and how it’s only when we embrace our doubts that we can grow and move onto the next stage.
After the interview, Nomad hosts Tim Nash and Nick Thorley ponder the role doubt played in the evangelicalism they inherited, and in the deconstruction and reconstruction of their faith.

Interview starts at 20m 14s

I reached this kind of place by a Monday night, Tuesday morning, such as the pattern of my week,

0:55.8

where I sort of think I've achieved sort of Zen, like ultimate transcendence.

Yeah.

1:02.2

And then by Tuesday evening, I'm like flat on the floor and I realize it's just because I haven't had my kids for two and a half days.

1:13.3

And also, to make much worse, Tim, I know you're not interested in my nutritional stuff, but I've been trying out a new nutritional approach.

1:20.0

Find that sounds a bit better than saying I'm on a different diet. A new, new one, because I thought

1:24.0

you were on a new one. I'm on a new one, but I've gone like mega low carbs and it's been really interesting

1:29.1

1:39.5

This is amazing.

1:40.5

Oh, do you know what?

1:41.5

I'm not going to eat hardly anything today. And then like today, I've just felt terrible all day.

1:48.0

I'm really miserable. And literally, honestly, this is what happened. Just before I called the kids into the kitchen for tea, I started singing.
