| 0:00.0 | Welcome to Breaking Down Patriarchy. I'm Amy McPhee, All the Best. In recent centuries, our world has |
| 0:07.0 | deepened its relationship with the sciences and technology. We celebrate life-saving medical advances. |
| 0:14.2 | We continue to develop faster and faster methods of computing. And many of us were recently |
| 0:19.8 | staring at our screens in awe, |
| 0:22.2 | admiring the stunning images from the James Webb telescope. We depend upon science, |
| 0:28.0 | technology, engineering, and math, or STEM fields to bring ease and entertainment and wonder |
| 0:35.1 | to our lives. So it's no surprise that many of the fastest growing and highest paying careers are within |
| 0:41.8 | these fields of study. |
| 0:43.8 | And yet, if we apply a lens of gender to STEM fields, what we find is that only 28% of the |
| 0:50.4 | STEM workforce is made up of women. |
| 0:53.2 | Why is this? |
| 0:56.9 | Well, studies have shown a number of factors discouraging girls and women from exploring STEM fields, including pervasive gender stereotypes |
| 1:02.9 | about quote-unquote male and female jobs, an absence of role models, inaccurate beliefs |
| 1:10.8 | that women are inferior at mathematics. |
| 1:14.0 | And finally, there are the male-dominated cultures within these fields where women historically |
| 1:19.0 | haven't even been allowed. So taken all together, it's no wonder that so many girls find |
| 1:24.6 | themselves pushed away from studying math or science or engineering. |
| 1:28.8 | In many ways, it feels like there's still a no-girls-allowed sign on the door. |
| 1:33.6 | Okay, so you might think then, well, if women aren't allowed in the so-called left brain fields, |
| 1:38.9 | then they must dominate in the right brain fields. |
| 1:41.9 | If women are still discouraged and discriminated against in STEM, |
| 1:45.3 | then at least they must thrive in the arts. Well, I'm guessing you know where this is going. |
