Summary

Habits. Patterns. Behaviors we’ve put in place purposefully or not. At the start of the new year we kid ourselves with our bravado of new ambitions. But in reality, our zeal usually lasts no longer than a cup of coffee. Not because we’re insincere in our passionate pursuits, we just don’t know how to break the bad and make the good. Until today. Join me in today’s Episode, Breaking Bad - Breaking the Spell of Habits, as we reframe resolutions into forever rituals.

What's the first thing you do every morning? Or maybe what's the first thing you think of before your feet touch the floor?

0:09.7

For me, I'm usually woken up by the smell of coffee. Full disclosure, I'm fairly a morning person.

0:18.3

I actually like getting up really, but what I don't like is coffee that's

0:22.3

been sitting idle in a pot for too long. So the thought of laying in bed while fresh coffee has

0:29.4

just been brewed is all the reason I need in getting out of bed. I pull back the sheets,

0:36.6

pour a cup, take the dog out, and just like that, my day has

just now.

1:16.6

But I'd like to illustrate how easy it is to make new habits, ones that you actually want

1:23.6

to keep, ones that become second nature. Imagine, if you will, a metal chain laid out before you.

1:33.2

Let's make it easy. Maybe 10 links in this chain. For example, the first link of my chain was the

1:41.3

smell of coffee. The second link was pulling back the bed sheets. Third was pouring a cup of

1:49.6

coffee and the fourth chain was taking our Bernadoodle Derby out for a morning walk. Today we're going

1:57.5

to break down why we have the habits we have, be them good or bad, and how we can

2:04.4

replace them. And of course, with a new year, new you, we'll learn why some habits, no matter how

2:12.4

shiny they appear, just don't stick.
