Summary

A conversation with the Circle CEO about the prospects for traditional finance to move into DeFi.

This episode is sponsored by NYDIG.

This conversation was originally released as a sponsored content webinar from Circle and CoinDesk. NLW decided to release it on his podcast of his own volition and was not paid to do so. The conversation covers why institutions are becoming interested in DeFi, which institutions are starting to participate and what barriers remain.

Welcome back to The Breakdown with me, NLW.

0:09.1

It's a daily podcast on macro, Bitcoin, and the big picture power shifts remaking our world.

0:16.2

The breakdown is sponsored by Nidig and produced and distributed by CoinDesk.

0:22.6

What's going on, guys? It is Monday, July 5th.

0:26.2

Now, technically, this is when the July 4th holiday is recognized. So CoinDesk is out.

0:32.6

And at first, I was thinking maybe I would just have to not have a show.

0:36.3

But a couple of weeks ago, I hosted a

0:38.7

webinar with Circle for Coin Desk. The conversation was about institutions coming to Defi.

0:45.5

I've said before, and I'll say it again, that ultimately for me, the breakdown is a show about

0:50.1

power. And the reason that I focus more on Bitcoin than other parts of the crypto markets

0:54.5

is that I think Bitcoin has undeniably taken a seat at the power shift table.

1:00.4

I've been watching, however, to see if Defi in particular starts to take on a similar role,

1:05.8

at least in narratives and discussions.

1:08.2

Part of that is about how the government looks at it, and this week clearly we saw

1:11.8

more focus from a regulatory perspective on defy. But part of it is also how institutions, these big

1:18.6

traditional financial behemots, are looking at the space. I think the verdict is still out. I think

1:23.5

it's still early. But I think that this conversation with Jeremy, if you're interested

1:27.6

in such questions, is a really good primer and a really good snapshot of this moment in time.

1:33.7

Now, one thing I want to be clear about is that this was a paid partnership between Circle and

1:38.3

Coin Desk. This is not editorial content, it's sponsored content. But I also want to be clear that

1:44.0

in no way was I

1:45.1

obligated to put this on the show. Circle didn't expect or pay for this to be a part of the breakdown.
