And welcome back to the Cover 3 podcast here on CBS Sports. That's Barton Simmons. I'm Chip Patterson. Brady Quinn will be joining us shortly.

But Barton first, we've got some some headline worthy news this week in college football. It was ups and downs. He's out. He's in. He's gonna red shirt Derek King from Houston.

He has decided that he will red shirt the rest of the season. The official release from Houston says that he's going to remain with the Cougars and have a red shirt senior season in 2020.

He's father had made comments leading into the official announcement suggesting that Derek King might be taking that red shirt to preserve his eligibility so that he could go and play somewhere else.

The Kelly Bryant way or the Kelly Bryant root I guess you could say for what we've seen recently. It's a Barton.

Number one, one of the most electrifying players in college football is not going to be playing in 2019 anymore. That's a bummer. Number two, there's a lot to unpack with this in terms of, you know, Derek King, his relationship with the Houston football program, his relationship with Dana Holgerson and everything moving forward.

He also gets us back into the compete cowboys out here, you know, right? Yeah, with the transfer talk. So, you know, how how do you sort of how do you approach this story this week?

Well, okay, first of all, a lot like you said, a lot to unpack. First of all, I would say this, I think, Derek King probably, and this is just my opinion, probably plans to transfer.

I think he sat down with Dana Holgerson, I think Dana Holgerson said, hey, buddy, I know you want transfer just but look, give me the year, give me the season to convince you and show you our plan for you.

Why this is going to be a good place for you? I will support your red shirt this year and just give me some time to show you what we have planned for you and why this is the right place.

Derek King says, okay, no problem. I'll give that to you coach, but just so you know, I'm going to really evaluate my options once the season and see what other depth charts look like.

See who's going pro, see who needs me and I might dip into the transfer portal and explore those options. I got to do us best for me coach. I know you expect you respect that.

And I think that's where we're at. And ultimately, if he is going to transfer, he can't really evaluate those options right now.

Anyway, he's got to wait until these seasons over. He's got to see who's injured, who's not who's heading to the NFL, who's not, which programs are excited about their next guy up and which ones really need a quarterback because hey, I mean, LSU could use a guy next year.

I mean, I don't know if you have fit for what Georgia does, but Georgia is going to need a transfer to a grad transfer. I mean, I don't know what Georgia's answer is going to be a quarterback next year to keep this thing going.
