I've lived in lots of places over the years,

and sometimes I've had wet sticky clay soil,

sometimes chalky limestone soil and sometimes something in between, but at the moment I've got typical Surrey soil which is pure sand.

I could dig my garden up and sell it to the builder's merchant for building purposes.

It's a tricky soil to work with because being nothing but

sand, it dries out by early July, which makes late crops difficult, though it's fantastic for early

crops. I can often sow seeds by the end of February, which gardeners with clay soil can only dream

about. Over the years, I spent a fortune on manure and compost to improve the soil and

it's now at a very high state of fertility. I used to dig the whole garden every year and now I tend

to do very little digging, not exactly no digging but what they call reduced cultivations.

So I just loosen the soil with the fork where it needs it,

rotate it where it needs a lot of renovation, but mostly I just hoe off the weeds.

So I've become a much lazier gardener over time, doing much less work with my spade and digging,

but I don't think the yields have suffered, and in line with current thinking, less disturbance,
