Summary

...because who's more qualified to talk about the challenges of being a mother than someone without kids, right?! Right?! 3.5 million women were pushed out of the workforce in March 2020 because of caretaking challenges. Overnight, we dropped to 1988 levels of women’s workforce participation, which confirms the theory that there’s a causal relationship between childcare availability and affordability, and women’s workforce participation. Hear from your favorite childless woman (yours truly!) and a slew of Rich-Girls-Turned-Rich-Moms about how they've addressed these challenges in their own lives. One of the Rich Girls (Moms) who called in is also a personal finance writer: Ashley Feinstein Gerstley is the author of Financial Adulting, a guide that breaks down everything you need to be a financially confident and conscious adult. As a trusted money expert, she has appeared on or been quoted in The Financial Times, the TODAY Show, CNBC, Forbes, NBC, Glamour and the The New York Times. Ashley has worked in the financial services industry for over fifteen years: first as an investment banker, then in corporate finance, and most recently running The Fiscal Femme. She graduated with a bachelor's in finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Follow along Instagram Twitter Blog Learn more about your ad choices. But that is a topic for another day.

I will warn you though in some ways, this episode feels like the healthcare episode.

0:55.0

In the sense that it's explanatory of why things are broken and expensive and a little

1:00.4

bit lighter on individual solutions, but I think you'll understand why that is shortly.

1:05.7

And frankly, I don't love providing this type of information without providing actionable

1:10.5

advice or tactical things that you can do, but that's kind of the reality of the issue.

1:15.7

We are trying to solve big public service problems with individual solutions, and it just

1:22.0

doesn't work very well.

1:23.8

I will attempt to give some advice at the end and ways to approach the issue, but to be

1:28.6

clear, this is more of a policy issue than something you can finagle your way around,

1:33.2

short of making a shit ton of money, which is to be fair, the antidote for most problems

1:37.6

in the United States.

1:39.1

This is more an exploration of the economic state of things, and as a result, the government

1:44.7

will get brought into the conversation.
