True to his threat, the mad scientist, whose warnings have held the city in a grip of terror,

went on his rampage of destruction on the stroke of midnight.

The deadly impact of his mysterious ray smashed the famous tower bridge, hurling cars and pedestrians into the river below.

This looks like a job for Superman. Hello and welcome to Down These Mean Streets in this week's

Superman's Summer Bonus episode. Last Friday Superman investigated a series of mysterious plane crashes and foiled a villain's

dastardly scheme.

Today, a new adventure for the Man of Steel begins, a story that starts when someone tries to kill a celebrated

photographer in the offices of the daily planet.

When Superman confronts the shooter, he learns of a larger plot involving a governor who's been targeted by an infamous gangster. Soon Kent and the photographer are en route to Buffalo Hills, where the governor is due to appear at a special ceremony and where the gangster may try to seek his revenge.

This is a great serial with plenty of action and a few surprises along the way. It's also got a terrific villain in gangster

Pete Flores. The bad guys in these Superman stories haven't always been the most compelling characters.

Sure, we've had a few pop up like the wolf and the yellow mask, but by and large they haven't

been very memorable. This is the first villain in a couple of weeks that I think presents a good challenge for Superman.

No Lois or Jimmy this time around.

Instead, Clark Kent is teamed with the colorful character of photographer Asa Hutch in his investigation.
