Hello, James Acaster here, and in 2017, I had a breakdown. I dealt with that breakdown by buying as much music from 2016 as I possibly

could. As a result, I now own over 600 albums that came out in 2016 and I'm convinced

it's the greatest year for music of all time. But as you all know, it's not enough me being

convinced. I want to convince each and every single one of you as well. And this is a bonus

episode, obviously on the regular podcast. I get a guest on every week.

I send them an album from 2016, and we talk about it.

This week, I spoke to Desiree Birch about the album Palimpsest.

And on this bonus episode, we're going to take a deep dive and really look at that album.

As I got the opportunity, great opportunity, to interview the creator itself, the artiste Funyap.

I should have known your silky way.

She spoke to me from her hometown of Calgary in Canada.

We spoke over the phone, lovely, lovely stuff.

She was incredibly open about the mental and emotional

struggles that she's faced in her journey to become the artist that she is today.

And we discussed her tumultuous family life and her rebellion against her Chinese Catholic family

and the pressures of a classical music education as well.
