Summary

Does the church need a "queer revolution"? Do we need a new reformation akin to the Protestant Reformation? In this discussion, Sean talks with author and progressive pastor Brandan Robertson about his new book Queer & Christian. They have a friendly debate about their different moral and theological frameworks and then discuss key biblical passages such as Genesis 2, Matthew 19, and Romans 1. Welcome to a bonus episode of the Think Bivocally podcast.

This is Sean McDowell here, and you might be thinking, wait a minute, it's Friday.

0:07.9

We're supposed to have a weekly cultural update.

0:09.8

Well, Scott Ray and I are taking off July to relax because those weekly cultural updates take a lot of work.

Today I'm posting a friendly debate, you might say, a substantive conversation with a self-identified progressive Christian by the name of Brandon Robertson.

0:27.9

Now, by a progressive Christian in a previous conversation he and I had, he holds a position that he believes Jesus sinned and repented.

0:36.0

Now, for those of you who follow the Think Biblically podcast, would say that is out of bounds of Orthodox Christianity and is clearly about another gospel. And I would agree with that.

conversations in a way that I think you will enjoy. So share this with a friend. Enjoy. Make sure you hit

subscribe. And thanks for following. Well, let's just jump right in. Your book is called

queer and Christian. That word has a lot of different meanings.

1:30.2

So why don't you tell us what you mean by queer?

1:33.6

Yeah, queer is an umbrella term, essentially, for the entire LGBT community.

1:38.5

It's grown in popularity, especially in the United States.

1:41.9

But for me, I lean into the actual kind of pre-LGB

1:47.2

definition of the term in that queer means being unique. It means being at odds with systems

1:53.4

and structures that ask you to conform. And so I look at that both biblically, using kind of the

1:59.3

Pauline language of be not conform to the the image of this world, be transformed.

2:03.1

It's about being authentically who God created us to be.
